Jamaica

Flying to Jamaica was a long overdue trip. I had chosen RIU Ocho Rios as my hotel, which was about a 1-hour and 30-minute drive from the airport. I can’t recall the exact cost of the transportation, but I do remember that it was a bit on the pricier side. For my fellow Caribbean readers, you’ll find that both US dollars and Jamaican dollars are widely accepted, so you can easily use whichever currency you’re comfortable with.

When I finally arrived at the RIU Ocho Rios, I knew instantly that it was the perfect choice. I’ve stayed at different RIU hotels around the world, but I can confidently say that Jamaica’s RIU stands out as the most unique and immersive experience. What I love about this particular RIU is how they embrace the Jamaican culture—despite being an international chain, the resort feels deeply connected to the island’s roots. From the vibrant staff and delicious local food to the lively atmosphere, it’s clear that Jamaica’s rich culture permeates every aspect of the resort. The activities and events they offer are non-stop, meaning you could easily spend your entire stay at the hotel and never run out of things to do. But of course, I couldn’t visit Jamaica without exploring a bit.

One of the highlights of my trip was taking a boat ride to the famous Dunn’s River Falls. The ride itself was an absolute blast—complete with local music, refreshing drinks, and plenty of dancing. The tour guides were hilarious and made the experience even more enjoyable. Once we arrived at Dunn’s River Falls, we set off on a light hike up the falls. The hike was beginner-friendly and a fantastic way to connect with nature. It was a great bonding experience for families and friends, and the cool, clear water of the falls was such a beautiful sight.

Another unforgettable activity I took part in was ATV riding and ziplining. Now, I know you can find these activities all over the world, but the way they were executed in Jamaica made them truly special. The energy of the island and the warmth of the Jamaican people made the experience ten times more enjoyable. Whether you’re zooming through the jungle on an ATV or soaring through the treetops on a zipline, the adrenaline and excitement are only amplified by the culture around you. I would absolutely recommend these activities to anyone visiting Jamaica—they’re a must-try!

That being said, I do want to mention that Jamaica can be a little on the pricier side compared to other destinations. Since both US dollars and Jamaican dollars are accepted, many tourist spots prefer USD, and some prices can feel a bit inflated for certain activities or souvenirs. While it didn’t spoil my trip, it’s something to keep in mind when budgeting.

Despite the occasional higher costs, Jamaica easily ranks in my top 5 or 3 best vacation destinations. The combination of fun activities, stunning scenery, great food, and, most importantly, the warmth of the Jamaican people makes it a place that’s hard to beat.

Whether you’re looking to unwind on the beach, dive into thrilling adventures, or simply immerse yourself in the vibrant culture, Jamaica has it all. I can’t wait to return and continue to experience all the magic this incredible island has to offer!
